COMMENT | The Rally World Series sinks deeper and deeper into the quagmire. There’s a lot to talk about, but only three “Tats” are fighting for the title

When Mohammed Ben Sulayem, rally driver in fact and soul, 14-time champion of the Middle East, was elected president of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) two years ago, rally fans put down their champagne, thinking that there might be a reason to open. By that time, the World Rally Championship series had already declined so much that it was almost impossible to crash. But then the corks on the champagne bottles started popping as Ben Sulayem sat on the table with promises. “We always talk about Formula 1, but we must not forget the other fields and we must look at the WRC series,” said Sulayem.

A year has passed, and during this year’s Monte Carlo Rally, Sulayem appeared before journalists to report. The summary of his long speech was: “I come from the world of rallying and I see the problems indicated by the fact that only two and a half car manufacturers participate in the World Series. This is not enough. You can’t just sit there, the area needs to be made desirable again.”
