Cosmic race for Lagrange points: read what it’s about

Lagrange points, named after astronomer Joseph-Louis Lagrange, are interplanetary points where the gravitational attraction of two celestial bodies (such as the Earth and the Sun) balances the centrifugal force needed to keep the smaller object in a stable orbit, and where the low-mass body can remain stationary. This stability makes them ideal “parking spaces” for satellites and telescopes. Spacecraft can stay in these areas for long periods of time without spending too much fuel. It simultaneously provides a continuous view of our planet and its natural companion, the Moon, as well as an ideal vantage point for observing changes in Earth’s weather.

The lack of atmosphere and the proximity of L1 and L2 to the Moon make these places popular parking spots. Whoever has control over these points will have a significant advantage in space exploration, communications and surveillance.
