Eero Merilind: The fewer doctors there are in the national health system, the longer the queues here become

We often wonder whether more money in the healthcare system gives patients better access to medical care. At the same time, for example, in the United States, which spends almost 20% of GDP on the healthcare system, the healthcare system is characterized by great inequality and low copayments.

European Union countries spend on average 11% of GDP on the healthcare system. In Estonia, in recent years, this figure has been between 6 and 7%. So you can say we have less money in the healthcare system.

If we look at the financing forecasts of the Health Fund, we see that the deficit will increase in the following years, reaching 250 million euros after 4 years. For comparison, the budget of the two largest hospitals in Estonia, the Tartu University Clinic and the Northern Estonia Regional Hospital, is around 200 million. With very pessimistic forecasts, this means that in 4 years we will have to do without the services of two large hospitals in Estonia, because there will not be enough money.
