Update 1.50, as confirmed by ArtPlay, ​the ‌studio co-founded by Koji Igarashi of Castlevania fame,⁣ introduces two modes that were initially part of the stretch⁤ goals during the game’s 2015 Kickstarter campaign. Henrietta Verhoustinska: I welcome the wonderful pianist Reina Zariņa to the studio! You chose a very broad and philosophical quote. Who is its author?

Reinis Zariņš: Its author is the British thinker Clive Staples Lewis, known worldwide as the author of “The Chronicles of Narnia”, although he has written much more than that. I came across the quote just a few days ago and it blew me away. Maybe this idea in itself is not new, but I would like to try to live as it is said there – not to be a stumbling block to my neighbor.

I managed to listen to Rihard Dubra’s performance of “Visions of the Way of the Cross. Light” on the recording, and I was surprised by that titanic work – an hour and a half depiction of Christ’s most severe sufferings. What did this huge job demand of you physically, mentally and emotionally?

It was an extraordinary experience. Maybe because it’s the first time I’ve worked in a job where there’s a lot of suffering, pain and evil. I also got sick a lot while learning this work, the composer also had problems composing it. We think that there is probably some kind of connection, although we can’t say it unequivocally, we don’t need to speculate too much.

You already let it into you.

You have to let it in, you have to adapt to it, you have to participate in it. But I think the listener perceives that this evil is not rejoicing in evil, but that the composer Rihards Dubra is actually mocking evil. Therefore, in particular, I think that this work should be played, heard not only at Easter. It’s something very unusual to experience the darkness coming from someone who looks from the side of the light and knows that the light will win no matter what.

This is a much needed thought today.

When playing this piece, did you feel like a priest, like a medium? Wasn’t it a different feeling than usual when performing the pieces?

No way. Not otherwise than usual. I think I’m always in that story. I absorb it to some extent and then I try to convey it to the listeners so that we are all in on this adventure, on this journey. Of course, maybe there are some topics that are closer to me personally and mean more. The theme of this piece is fundamental to my worldview, and since learning it, this work has been close to my heart. Therefore, maybe I have more passion, immersion, indulgence than other times. However, I don’t think I would be a priest. The musician is actually a mediator between the composer and the page that itself does not sound. The musician gives it life.

In yours in an interview with Dāvi Ängeli I was surprised when you said that you don’t listen to much music outside of playing and that your favorite music is silence.

Maybe from the outside it sounds a little strange, but in reality it is already the case that I spend every day all day with music, I am in music all the time, I play a lot, analyze, evaluate, improve. And sometimes I need to rest this sense. In order to enjoy music, I need silence, which is not so easy to get in family life.

Life is generally quite noisy, there is a lot of household noise – I have absolutely no need to listen to music in the background.

I remember that Vestard Šimkus said in an interview that silence is not really possible for him, because music is playing in his head all the time, even when he is in a quiet room. Do you also come across something like this?

I know there are people who can’t sleep because something is always going on in their head, something is sounding. I guess I’m lucky that I don’t have such torment. When I am calm, I can also sleep very well.

How do you feel on the day of the concert? Do any domestic concerns help you to devote yourself later to the musical composition during the concert?

Yes, I can relate to that. By the way, it was precisely in connection with the Dubras concert that I decided that I wanted to tell a parallel story with lights, to create a scenario. It was all in my head and it all happened on the day of the concert. This means that I spent most of that day at the lighting console, looking for solutions with the lighting designer.

I think it’s healthy to stay connected to reality instead of fighting lamp fever.
