Estonia is crying: many rural areas have been left clutching at straws due to power cuts

Marianne Sokk, public relations specialist for the Tõrva municipal government, said on Wednesday afternoon that almost 900 families were without electricity, while several regions – Koorküla, Taagepera, Ala and Karjatnurme – remained without electricity for the entire day.

“According to Elektrilev it will be possible to restore electricity by tomorrow evening (Thursday – ed.), but the reasons for the interruptions are not yet clear and this does not give reason for excessive optimism,” Sokk said. Due to the power cut, the school in Riidaja was closed on Wednesday and the school in Ala the following day, but the doors are still open if necessary and the houses are warm.

The media reported more on Wednesday about the situation in Rõuge, southern Estonia, where several municipal institutions, including the municipal government, remained without electricity. Village communications manager Viivika Nagel said that children from the Mõniste school and kindergarten, the Rõuge school, the Nursi group of the Rõuge kindergarten and the Ruusmäe group of the Haanja kindergarten remained at home on Wednesday morning. Municipal officials work in the Rõuge youth centre, in home offices or in service centres.
