Estonia trained 1,300 Ukrainian soldiers in two years

“We have trained more than 1,300 Ukrainian soldiers since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russia. This mainly means basic training for soldiers, but also training for artillery, marksmen and snipers, as well as computer training,” said Roland Murof , spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense.

Taavi Laasik, press officer of the General Staff of the Defense Forces, explained that every year almost 3,800 conscripts are trained in the Estonian Defense Forces. In 2024, the number of conscripts established by the regulation of the Minister of Defense is 3,900 conscripts. Similar to Estonian conscripts, Ukrainians also receive training in various Estonian military units.

According to him, in organizing the training of Ukrainians, the training plan of the units of the Defense Forces was taken into account. “This undoubtedly means additional activities and efforts, but the help to the Ukrainians did not directly influence the organization of training of the defense forces,” Laasik stressed to the ERR.

According to Murof, training costs of Ukrainian military personnel are covered both bilaterally and within the framework of the European Union’s EUMAM military assistance mission. Representatives of the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces admitted that they could not speak more precisely about the training of Ukrainians and its costs.
