Floods in Germany show no signs of abating | foreign country

Floods in Germany show no signs of abating. The situation in northern Germany is particularly difficult.

Even though the rain has stopped, water continues to collect behind the dams. In the village of Lilienthal, on the border between Bremen and Lower Saxony, a dam broke and people had to be evacuated. 5,000 sandbags were placed as dams to protect homes, Aktualne Kamaera reported.

“At the six meter mark we go into watch mode, which means a keeper is on the dike all day to see whether the dams are OK,” said Dresden fire brigade spokesman Michael Klahre.

The water level on the Elbe in Dresden is expected to rise by more than six meters, after which the durability of the dams will be monitored. In addition to Germany, rivers have also overflowed their banks in the Netherlands, submerging entire cities and rural areas.

“I think I’ll stay overnight at the sports hall. Maybe we’ll come back tonight, I don’t know, I don’t know,” said Lilienthal resident Dirk Elgert. “It’s nature, you can’t do anything about it.”
