France plans to ban disposable e-cigarettes

French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne and Health Minister Aurelien Rousseau support the ban, which aims to protect the health of young people and mitigate the environmental impact of increasingly popular single-use products. The National Assembly was expected to vote on the measure on Monday evening. If approved, it would pass the Senate and could take effect by September 2024.

Disposable e-cigarettes are small, battery-powered devices that deliver vaporized nicotine with various flavors. They do not contain tobacco, but contain a large amount of nicotine, which is easily addictive.

Anti-tobacco president Marion Catellin said disposable e-cigarettes are made of plastic and contain lithium batteries and other heavy metals, including cobalt and bromine. They also contain nicotine, which is toxic.

Disposable e-cigarettes differ from reusable vaping devices in that they are not intended to be refilled or refilled. Their small, non-rechargeable lithium batteries often end up in the trash, polluting the environment. E-cigarettes are popular among teenagers due to their sweet taste.

New Zealand and Australia have already imposed restrictions on disposable e-cigarettes. New Zealand’s measures include lower nicotine levels and restrictions on e-cigarette shops near schools. The United Kingdom, Ireland and Germany are considering similar measures.

The surge in disposable e-cigarettes began in the U.S. market when the Food and Drug Administration banned flavored reusable e-cigarettes in 2020. The flavor restrictions did not apply to single-use products, which are becoming increasingly common.
