Gallery: the exhibition “Nina Võnnõku Ukraine” was born from the artist’s nostalgia Art

The exhibition “Nina Võnnõku’s Ukraine” was inaugurated in the Temnikova and Kasela Gallery in Tallinn, where 19 wall sconces and 6 author’s books on the applique technique of the naive artist Nina Võnnõku are collected. The exhibition is the gallery’s statement of support for Ukrainian artists.

Nina Võnnõk, a Ukrainian woman who moved to Estonia, only started making collages at the age of 70. Wall and album images born from a great homesickness tell of an ideal world where evil has no access, the difficulties of daily life and the depth of worries are replaced by the affirmation of life and joy. An illusory heavenly world is revealed in her works with the simplicity, sincerity, intimate details and bright color palette characteristic of naive art.

“Imagine, he lived there in a village and worked and worked and worked. Then he came here, a beautiful son, a beautiful daughter-in-law. There was a lot of free time and then the energy hidden somewhere in His subconscious was liberated He had wanted to do this all his life, but did not have the opportunity, but here there was both the will and the opportunity,” said Anatoly Lyutjuk, head of the Ukrainian Cultural Center.

According to Olga Temnikova, she had to educate herself a lot to create the exhibition. “It wasn’t easy, because it’s actually a naive creation, I won’t tell you anything. I really respect it and I enjoy it, but I’m not that good at talking about it. I had to educate myself a lot to create this exhibition. It’s really a great collaboration,” he said.

“It’s actually no different from what we usually show, because we show current art. I’ve wanted to show our support for Ukrainian artists for a long time,” the gallery owner confirmed.
