In the basketball Euroleague, the home team consisting of Estonian national team members Maik-Kalev Kotsari and Sander Raieste defeated Crvena zvezda in Belgrade in Baskonia on Thursday.
The home team scored 30 points in the first quarter and won 52:43 at the break, but Markus Howard hit two straight long-range shots early in the third period and Baskonia remained on Crvena zvezda’s heels. With 2.23 left in the third quarter, Howard’s triple gave Baskonia the lead, and the Spanish club began the final ten minutes with a 69:62 lead.
Another long shot from Howard already puts the guests ahead by 11 points, but the Belgrade side keep Baskonia within reach and two minutes before the final siren Rokas Giedraitis’ triple brings Crvena zvezda back to one point. In the final minutes Howard shines again, Codi Miller-McIntyre and Vanja Marinkovic make important free throws.
Howard scored 17 points for Baskonia in the third quarter and added nine more in the final period for a total of 32 points (7/10 from long range) on Thursday. Kotsar remained on the court for six and a half minutes and in that time he collected four points and a rebound, Raieste, who played just under four minutes, had a rebound. Yago Dos Santos was the home team’s top scorer with 26 points.
Baskonia, which achieved its second consecutive victory, is in seventh place in the Euroleague standings with 12 wins and 10 defeats, the same win-loss ratio can be achieved by Olympiakos, Monaco and Partizan, who played one game less . Crvena Zvezda has nine wins and 13 losses.
