The European Parliament has called for Hungary to be stripped of its voting rights before the next summit

MEPs voted 345 in favor and 104 against the resolution, which condemns “the Hungarian government’s deliberate, continuous and systematic efforts to undermine the EU’s fundamental values,” according to Reuters.

The resolution also criticizes Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who last month vetoed the EU’s €50 billion financial aid package to Ukraine.

The MEPs’ move has no legal effect, but increases political pressure on Orbán and sends a political signal to other EU institutions that MEPs are not satisfied with Orbán’s withdrawal of the rule of law.

Parliament’s move was made two weeks before a summit of European leaders in February, where they will once again try to agree new aid to Ukraine. The Commission and EU countries hope to convince Hungary to give up its opposition to the allocation of EU funds to Ukraine, Politico writes.

MEPs also called for the possibility of transferring the EU’s executive power to the Court of Justice of the European Union, outraged by the decision to allocate around 10 billion euros to Hungary.
