Hungarian drivers also join the protest started by Polish truck drivers

Hungarian truck drivers will begin an official protest and block the Zahony-Chop checkpoint on the Ukrainian border from December 11, local media reported.

The Hungarian Truck Drivers’ Association said the protests aimed to draw the attention of the European Commission and the Hungarian government to the deal, which has a serious market-distorting effect.

Hungarian border guards said that unlike Poland, the planned protest by Hungarian carriers will not block the border between the countries.

Before the full-scale Russian invasion, Ukrainian drivers had to apply for a transport permit to enter EU countries. Brussels last year suspended permits until June 2024 to help Ukraine’s war-ravaged export industry.

Truck drivers from Hungary, Poland and Slovakia say they are treated unfairly because their Ukrainian colleagues do not have to buy expensive permits. Polish leaders have said they will lose jobs to Ukrainian companies offering lower prices.

Polish truck drivers say they will not refuse humanitarian and military aid, but charities providing military aid to Ukraine say they are facing weeks of delays in deliveries of drones, electronics and pickup trucks.
