The symptoms of infectious mononucleosis are very similar to the symptoms of many common viral colds. Acute pharyngitis, i.e. redness, sore throat and tonsils with a recognizably gray coating, swollen lymph nodes in the neck area, enlarged liver and spleen, swelling of the eyelids, swelling of the face, skin rashes and, less often, jaundice are the main causes . classic manifestations of Epstein-Barr mononucleosis.
“Infectious mononucleosis can be debilitating and long-lasting. It usually starts insidiously, with a vague feeling of malaise, followed days later by fever, tiredness, sore throat and swollen lymph nodes in the neck. Some patients may have a sudden flu-like onset of high fever accompanied by chills, body aches, headache, and sore throat. Children under 10 years of age may have mild or similar symptoms to other viral diseases,” explains Dr. Moosar, but adds that mononucleosis, which is transmitted very easily through body fluids, can also be completely symptomless. The pathological picture more classic occurs in adolescents and young adults.
That’s what happened to little Sandra, who woke up one morning in June last year with a headache and a fever that wouldn’t go away for weeks. A nagging cough and runny nose soon followed.
