Kivirand points out that it is actually possible to train cats just like dogs, although owners often don’t bother. “Training a cat has its own tricks, because the cat is a solitary species and therefore does not feel the need to please its owner as much as the dog. However, training is also, for example, practice with the transport cage and with guidance, which is important at some point in every cat’s life. If we immediately open the refrigerator door to the cat after scolding it, the cat has already trained us,” he gives an example.
The cat school starting on January 6 at Petcity in Rannamõisa is aimed at owners to explain the cat as a species and its needs. “Unfortunately, cats are considered independent and low-maintenance animals, which is not true. Cats’ behavior and manifestations of stress are so different from those of humans that we cannot offer them an adequate living environment without going deeper,” explains the vet. “At the cat school I talk about the cat as a species, the peculiarities of the kitten, daily life with the cat, health and behavioral problems. I will answer all the questions and carry out a clinical examination of the kittens present regarding health checks. During the course I would try to make the cats themselves understand, for example, how to feel comfortable in the cage and put into practice the most common handling procedures.”
