The collective exhibition “Working with the existing. New directions in Japanese architecture”, which presents the generation of young Japanese architects, was opened on Friday in the large hall of the Rotermann salt warehouse of the Estonian Architecture Museum.

Most of the architects on display were born between the mid-1970s and mid-1990s and entered the profession after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and Fukushima nuclear disaster. They turned away from the usual image of the architect-author and discovered for themselves the magic of working together, planning from the bottom up and new roles that until now had not been considered important in the planning process.

According to Triin Ojar, director of the Estonian Architecture Museum, themes such as reconstruction, reuse of materials and inclusive design are relevant in architecture around the world, a progress-oriented future forces us to find new solutions.

The thoughts of Japanese architects and multi-layered urban space are brought closer to the viewer by numerous films, building models and large-scale photographs. The exhibition of the Swiss Museum of Architecture S AM is adapted for the Estonian Museum of Architecture. By Yuma Shinohara (S AM).

The exhibition “Working with the existing. New directions in Japanese architecture” is open until April 28th.
