In the new year, the training of police officers and the living conditions of cadets will improve significantly

Interior Minister Lauri Läänemets (SDE), who presented the budget decisions in the field of internal security, underlined that even in economically difficult times people’s feeling of security must not suffer. “The low number of police officers has long been the main internal security concern, so in the coming years additional funds will be allocated to increasing the amount of training of police officers, as well as the development of living and studying conditions for cadets,” Läänemets said.

According to him, for years more police officers have left the police and border office than have left the school. “In addition to salary, the retirement of police officers is also an important reason for leaving, which is why it was extremely important to ensure permanent budget funding for a significant increase in the training of police officers and for the development of the necessary conditions for this” , Läänemets emphasized.

According to the Interior Minister it is now reasonable to also invest in infrastructure and construction. “Our field of internal security still needs modern dormitories, buildings and school complexes. From the point of view of the state it is more convenient to implement these projects today, when the real estate and construction market is cooling down and therefore prices are lower Furthermore, we can thus support the construction sector and its jobs”, added Läänemets.

Regarding the new year’s budget, the Minister of the Interior highlighted as another important moment the additional 7.8 million euros allocated to the fulfillment of national defense tasks. “With this additional money we can significantly improve the recruitment and training of auxiliary police officers and for the first time we will guarantee permanent funding for civil protection. True, the amount could be higher, but permanent funding still allows us to improve the institutions’ crisis preparedness better and more systematically than before, starting with crisis reserves and sirens and ending with civil protection training courses, with which we offer the Estonian people the knowledge and skills to help if themselves and their neighbors in a crisis,” said Läänemets. .
