If you ask the uninitiated what the “Downton Abbey” series is really about, the usual answer is “snobbish English scammers doing things.” This simplistic assessment is not entirely wrong. The story of “Downton Abbey” may not always be full of action and suspense, but it offers the drama of a family struggling daily to survive.
The series begins with an event that reflects the fate of the Crawley family: the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. The shipwreck is a metaphor that shows the viewer the fate of aristocratic institutions in England such as Downton, which simply drown in modernism as the series progresses.
Such a topic may seem distant to Estonians, but the characters in the series offer many moments that every viewer can relate to. Penis, difficulty having children, lack of money, loss of job, death of a friend and many other themes bring “Downtown Abbey” to the center of modern themes, despite the fact that the series is set at the beginning of the 20th century.
If the overflowing feedback from critics and fans doesn’t convince you to watch “Downton Abbey,” then you might want to watch the series for its wonderful writing and camerawork.
“Downton Abbey” isn’t just a daily crime drama. There the difficulties of practically every class are shown, and all are tackled hand in hand. You can also see conflicts between them and there is no shortage of tragic deaths and love stories. The series truly has everything for every viewer. It also has a lot of historical background, partly based on real events. “Downton Abbey” perfectly tells the story of a time when society is changing and also shows a lot about how our world has become today.
Every time I watch this series, I feel like I’m among them. The camera and lighting work are really good. Not to mention the acting. The series reflects the last century, but from a technological point of view it is still very modern. The shots and camera angles are well thought out and don’t always match the typical “British detective series standard”.
Additionally, the top tier of British actors participating in “Downton Abbey” may be persuaded to watch the series. Hugh Bonneville (“Notting Hill”), Jim Carter (“Wonka”), Michelle Dockery (“Gentlemen”), Maggie Smith (“Harry Potter”), Dan Stevens (“Beauty and the Beast”) and many others offer the joy of recognition for all spectators.
