Kallas expects more EU investment in Ukraine and in European defense preparedness

“The European Union must keep its promise to deliver one million shells to Ukraine. I am convinced that if we use our reserves, recovery opportunities and allocate funds for new procurement, we will succeed,” Kallas said after the ‘encounter.

Kallas also supports the creation of a separate fund for Ukrainian aid of 20 billion under the European Peacekeeping Fund and hopes that an agreement will be reached in the near future. “Ukraine needs our quick decision on military aid. We must continue to support Ukraine as long as necessary and to the extent necessary to help the Ukrainians win. The more efficiently we do this, the faster the turning point will come war,” he underlined.

During the meeting with the commissioner, the need to invest more to increase Europe’s defense readiness was also discussed. Among them, they talked about the European Commission’s strategy for the defense industry, which would increase Europe’s production capacity and ensure a rapid increase in production during crises. The commission plans to present the document at the end of February.

“Investments by all Member States in defense industry capacity, including munitions production, and critical capabilities must be sufficient to ensure European security and help Ukraine win the war,” the Prime Minister said Estonian.

He underlined that Estonia has decided to provide military aid to Ukraine, the volume of which will be equal to 0.25% of GDP over the next four years. According to Kallas, Estonia’s defense costs have increased by more than 3% of the country’s GDP.
