Maris admitted that she discovered Karl through music. “You once performed somewhere with a band and we happened to listen to you with my sister and a friend,” Maris told Kroonika Kodu-er in an interview and looked at Karl. “After the concert we talked a little and then we stayed in touch. In this sense I have known Karavan and Karl for a long time: I grew up listening to Karavan’s Christmas songs. But why Carlo? In my childhood, yes, I had listened to the songs Karavan’s Christmas celebrations, but when my sister and I went to the concert where Karl performed, we started listening to his music more.”
Maris added that before the start of their relationship they had already met and corresponded with Karl several times. “At first we thought that we would never get over our relationship, that in the meantime we would meet in secret. That Karl won’t tell his children and I won’t tell my family. (I smiled.) But in the end we realized that it still can’t be done this way: that something else will come from here.”
What was the reason why they decided to hide their relationship? “The reason why we didn’t dare tell our loved ones about our relationship at first was the age difference,” Maris responded.

But I told my son that even though I don’t live with his mother, I still love her as if she were my own daughter. The relationship with Karl-Matthias is still extremely cordial and we had a very nice time at the country house Salla. Now, when she went to study in England, she told me something very touching. I asked her first what she and her mother usually talk about. She said that from everyday things: to wear it, go do this or that thing. And then the boy asked me, “Do you know why I wanted to go to the country with you all this time?” Because it was always so interesting to talk to me.
