Sony’s noise-canceling headphones have achieved legendary status in recent years, both in large on-ear models and small in-ear versions. However, the latter have previously sacrificed size for good sound and high-level noise reduction. The models from a few years ago were quite large and a little uncomfortable, last year’s version has a slightly more compact design, but still remains relatively large.
This year, however, Sony has launched a new model with a pleasantly small design. So it’s interesting to see whether Sony has still managed to pack top-notch noise cancellation and good sound quality into a much smaller shell, or whether compromises have been made for a competitive design.
One place where Sony is still going down the old road is in the names of the headphones. They are still made up of a complicated series of letters and numbers and it is quite difficult to distinguish between the different models. In good faith, the name suggests that the WF-1000XM5 represents Sony’s fifth generation of top-of-the-line in-ear noise canceling tubes.
