Kinosilm | “Promised Land” has grip, beauty of the image and also enough originality | Movie

In the weekly film overview broadcast by Tristan Priimäe, this time three films are reviewed: “The Promised Land”, which won three European film awards, Taika Waititi’s sports comedy “The Next Gate Wins” and the horror film “Night Bath “.

“The Promised Land” is a noteworthy film in its field, that is, in the category of historical epic narrative drama. There is grip, beauty of the image and also enough originality. Mads Mikkelsen, who plays the main character, Captain Kahlen, is furrowed by heather winds and fire flames, but his heroism is determined and unwavering, and incessant, screaming injustice ennobles his fight for a better future.

Mikkelsen is the real MVP, perhaps Most Valuable Player, who, if necessary, can save the game solely with his personal skills. Here, however, the burden does not fall only on him, because everyone does their job well and professionally. Norwegian Kristine Kujath Thorp as the aristocratic object of desire, who has always stood out for her good role choices, or Kahlen’s main enemy, de Schinkel (Simon Bennebjerg), whose sadism is believable and entertaining. The European Film Awards went to Mikkelsen for Best Actor, Rasmus Videbæk for Best Cinematography and Kicki Illander for Best Costume Design. “The Promised Land” is also on the shortlist for the Oscar for best international film and will probably also reach a nomination.

Hello Movie

Taika Waititi’s career choices are sometimes frustrating and unpredictable. One moment he’s doing something absolutely stunning like “Jojo’s Pants”, then good (“Thor. Ragnarök”) and bad (“Thor. Love and Sound”) Marvel, and now this comedy of pure joke in a strong ethnic sauce. “Next Gate Wins” is actually a film version of the 2014 documentary of the same name, and in these cases it tends to be the case that the original version is somehow better or makes more sense, and so it is. Anyway, I recommend taking a look at this dock too.

I guess Michael Fassbender always wanted to be like Robert De Niro, and in at least one respect he really is: neither of them is a comedian, but both manage to pull off their comedic parts with a lot of hard work. So here too. Waititi is, of course, a well-known prankster and absurd humorist, who here too lets himself be completely free. The fragments fly close together, some hitting the target and some not. “The next goal wins” is a really good gag, entertaining and above all funny all the time.

A purely sports film with the positive and negative sides of this genre: it is a good story of the self-overcoming of an underdog who is easy to relate to, where the viewer has the opportunity to shed a tear of gratitude with the characters after overcoming the difficulty. However, this same predictability also makes the film extremely schematic, although it must be said that the immersion in the local Samoan culture (for example, the third non-binary gender, quite common in Samoa) female) makes the film more memorable than any other of its genre. Nice, but not one of Waitit’s best films.

Hello Movie

The premise of “Night Bath” is very strong, given that the producers are James Blum (Blumhouse) and the director James Wan (Atomic Monster), the trailer seen is comfortingly sparse and the topic seems quite intriguing. The film about a swimming pool that lives behind a private house and haunts a newly moved family is predictable and a little silly in the first half. As is often the case with the horror genre, the problem here is that the narrative is pushed forward at the expense of the silliness of the characters. It makes you wonder if any of these people have ever seen a horror movie to make their behavior a little more cautious.

The second half of the film, however, also manages to create a certain atmosphere, as it begins to address the background and nature of this vague phenomenon. I will try to fix the words here so as not to spoil anything for a possible future viewer. Blumhouse was successful horror– a factory that produces both more and less successful products, I would have expected more from “Night Bathing”, but at the same time there is something here and the people and characters have been treated enough to think about it later. With Wyatt Russell, son of Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn.
