Nigula, the busiest actor in dramatic theatre: there is a certain charm in the orchestrated mass | People

Karmo Nigula, the busiest actor in dramatic theater in 2023, said on the “Owe Parsley Show” that on the one hand being busy is a statistical recognition, but on the other hand, of course, it’s very nice that people want to work with you. With last year’s revival of Brother Antigone, Mother Oedipus, she loves that everything is orchestrated and so enjoyable to play.

“I still had days off,” said Karmo Nigula, the busiest actor of the Estonian Drama Theater in 2023. “That meant 131 performances, which is not a record, but if you consider that the theater does 500 performances a year , I was able to attend a fifth of the performances. There weren’t many quiet periods, because there were also rehearsals. If there are rehearsals in the morning, it fills you up with all the days that have still passed. And when the summer piece arrives , there are rehearsals for the summer piece, and there are performances in the evening. In this sense, it’s a nice giving.”

“But the problem with this commitment is that you can have many different productions, but you can also have three very popular productions, and then you can also be the busiest actor,” Nigula said. “Last year the busiest actor in dramatic theater was Guido Kangur, who had three productions scheduled. Last year I had seven productions in which I acted. On the one hand, being busy is a statistical recognition, but obviously it’s very nice that people want to work with you. It’s just joy.”

According to Nigula it also has an additional service. “I was lucky enough to read advertising and have been dubbing nature documentaries at ERR since my seventh year,” she said. “I really like dubbing, it’s very relaxing. In a small way, we also form a band and go to perform. The luck is, of course, that I have a paid job. Thanks to this, I can still choose now, and also to say no, I have no burning sensation. But of course it would be nice if you could live only on the theater salary. Then you wouldn’t have to do extra things and if you have a family, you would spend the evening hours with your family, not elsewhere.”

Last year Nigula had the opportunity to star in three new productions. “’12 Angry Men’ is a very successful production. Next came ‘Uncle Bella’s Alphabet’ and then ‘Brother Antigone, Mother Oedipus’. The latter was my first encounter with Tiit Ojasoo,” he said Nigula. “This almost five-hour performance is a big marathon, but the energy is distributed very logically, so you don’t feel very tired after the show. What I like about this piece is the unity of the troupe. it’s casual play everywhere, everything is orchestrated and it’s so fun to play and it’s definitely enjoyable to watch, because there’s a magic in this orchestrated mass. You have to be there 100%, otherwise you won’t do this production.”

Talking about other activities, Nigula said that on New Year’s Eve he read Laur Lomper’s verses at the Radio Theater, where the characters were Estonian politicians, who could be imitated and parodied.

According to Nigula there is little humor and fun around us. He pointed out that because he and his family were sick on New Year’s Eve, he had time to watch TV longer and this year’s New Year’s programs were not very entertaining either. “Maybe it’s poor preparation or lack of ideas. Or people have nothing to say. How many good playwrights do we have who would write a good play?”

Nigula expects from the new year to be able to rest a little, think about her thoughts and do things that have not been done so far. “It’s a quieter time now,” he added. “For example, I went to work out. I felt very good.”
