The construction of the Baltic Defense Line in Latvia could take ten years, Latvian Defense Minister Andris Sprūds told the LETA agency today, Wednesday 24 January.

Preliminary calculations on the cost of the line have been made, but are still being refined. The government must decide how to align the costs of this intention with other national priorities, the minister stressed, recalling that security is one of the “big priorities”, reports lsm.lv.

“We are talking about big numbers. The plan is several years ahead, with activities specifically divided according to how the plan is implemented. All in all, we are talking about the next decade of construction and strengthening,” Sprūds said.

The Baltic countries’ agreement does not require all countries to start or finish construction of this line in perfect synchronization on the same day.

As previously reported, last week the defense ministers of all three Baltic states signed an agreement on the creation of the Baltic defense line. This significantly strengthens the ability of countries to protect the eastern border of the Baltic states and NATO, ensuring the delay and blocking of the movement of a potential adversary.
