Romania and Bulgaria join the Schengen area. What changes will it bring?

Bulgaria and Romania have been members of the European Union since 2007, but are not part of a border-free zone, so travelers still had to present a passport when entering the country.

Do I need a passport to enter Romania and Bulgaria?

With Romania and Bulgaria joining the Schengen area this year, it will be easier for travelers to visit these two countries.

The interior ministries of both countries announced in December that some border controls would be abolished. Passengers arriving by plane or ship from other Schengen countries will no longer need to present their passport upon arrival.

However, those arriving in Romania and Bulgaria by car, train or bus will still have to bring an identity document with them, as the regulation of land borders has not yet been established.

Non-EU travelers are advised to note that stays in Bulgaria and Romania count towards time spent in the Schengen area, which cannot exceed 90 days in any 180-day period.
