LAURI VAHTRE ⟩ Not immigrants, but invaders

Several human rights defenders and their associations, both here and elsewhere, have expressed indignation at what is happening on the eastern border of the European Union, where immigrants are reportedly treated very badly. Even a well-known civilized country like Finland behaved badly. The law that came into force in Estonia last year, which allows police and border guards to push back intruders directly from the border in an emergency, also appears to spark outrage.

Infiltrators – because that is what they are, not immigrants, asylum seekers, refugees or migrants. If someone tries to trespass somewhere he has no right to go there, at least not like he is doing, he is an intruder, take it or leave it. Entering foreign territory without permission is indicated in English with the word housebreaking and is considered a serious crime. Even if that means taking a quick walk on a stranger’s lawn, let alone breaking into a stranger’s apartment.
