LAV’s appeal to the International Court of Justice accuses Israel of having committed genocide in Gaza

According to the statement, the testimony at the ICJ concerns allegations of violence committed by Israel, which violates the obligations assumed by the Jewish state in its accession to the Genocide Convention.

According to the LAV, Israel has committed, is committing, and will continue to risk committing acts of genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza.

In the statement received in The Hague, LAV further states that Israel “has behaved with the required specific intent to destroy the Palestinians of the Gaza Strip, who belong to the broader national, racial and ethnic group of Palestinians.”

Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reacted extremely harshly to the announcement, saying it disapproved of South Africa’s request to the International Court of Justice.

“Israel condemns with disgust the blood libel spread by South Africa and its statement,” ministry spokesman Lior Haiat wrote on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

The war against Israel started by the Palestinian Islamic extremist group Hamas enters its twelfth week. Much of the northern part of the Gaza Strip is in ruins and Israel continues to carry out airstrikes and ground operations in the central and southern parts of the Palestinian enclave.

On October 7, Hamas launched a surprise attack on the Jewish state, killing around 1,140 people and taking around 250 hostages. More than half of them are still in captivity, some are believed to have already died.

According to Gaza’s Hamas-run Ministry of Health, Israel responded with attacks that killed at least 21,507 people, most of them women and children.

According to the Israeli army, 167 soldiers of the Jewish state were killed in clashes with Hamas in Gaza.
