This year the Morzine and Les Gets ski centers in the French Alps were only able to open their doors to guests two days before Christmas. But the future is even darker.
Of the 28 European ski resorts under observation, 53% have reason to fear that when the climate warms by 2 degrees it will no longer be possible to count on the amount of snow needed to operate the resort. However, if the climate warms by 4 degrees, 98% will suffer from a lack of snow, according to a study conducted at universities in the British publication Guardian.
The ski centers located below 1800-2000 meters are in greater difficulty.
Some hope that the Paris Climate Agreement will help skiing survive, especially if ski resorts and the ski world itself can make the necessary changes.
