MARGIT SUTROP ⟩ There is money for teacher pay increases if reforms are made

Yesterday, coalition member Liisa Pakosta (Estonia 200) wrote in Postimeh: “If the coalition decides that the following education cuts are necessary, the coalition must make tough political choices together. For example, making higher education entirely paid (currently the total cost of higher education is 274.7 million euros), by cutting research funding (226.5 million euros) or by paying nursery school support – 16 million euros – to schools instead of nurseries”.

I beg you from the bottom of my heart, let’s not reopen the agreement on the financing of higher education and research! There is no need to pit teachers against teachers of teachers! Cutting funding for higher education would jeopardize both teacher education and the science on which teacher education is based, the preparation of other high-level specialists, and the economic growth of the entire country. I really hope that Liisa Pakosta wasn’t serious, that she just wanted to protect the minister.
