According to Kallas, the government cabinet meeting will take place today, at which it will be decided whether negotiations on the collective agreement will be started. “Unfortunately, if the government does not accept the collective agreement, the strike will begin,” the minister said. “By Monday I would say it is almost impossible to avoid a strike, but I must never lose hope.”
Kallas explained that the education workers union has put two options on the table to avoid a strike. According to the first, the minimum salary for teachers should be raised this year to 1,950 euros, for which 46 million euros of additional money would be needed. Alternatively, the government should find 10 million euros to raise the minimum wage to 1,836 euros, and at the same time start negotiations on a collective agreement that would increase teachers’ salaries over the next three years.
