MTA sends reminders about unreported income

Erkki Paulus, head of the MTA’s tax audit unit, reminds that the MTA can retroactively request the correction of the declaration for up to three years or order the payment of the tax by decision. For example, the deadline for filing the personal income tax return for the year 2022 was May 2, 2023, then the amount of tax can be determined until May 2, 2026. If the taxpayer deliberately avoided paying taxes, then the above can be done for up to five years – then unpaid for the year 2022 the tax can be collected by an individual until 2 May 2028.

“We constantly monitor the tax behavior of private individuals and monitor it regularly. A person can come under scrutiny both based on personal risks and based on suggestions received from us. In the event of a violation, the declaration data will have to be corrected and all taxes will have to be paid,” he added.

When selling real estate, income tax is declared and paid only on the profit, both in the case of sale and exchange of real estate. For a person, the corresponding table on the tax return is also usually pre-filled according to the data of the Land Authority, but the person is obliged to ensure that the pre-filled data is correct. If necessary, the data will need to be integrated and the acquisition cost and costs related to the sale will need to be indicated. If it is a property whose sale is subject to tax exemption (for example, tax exemption for the sale of a house), the transaction does not need to be declared.

More than 1,600 real estate transactions had been pre-filled in 2022, of which auditors from the Tax and Customs Commission had additional questions on the declaration of around 500, noting that the data is not consistent with each other or that the declaration was not submitted at all .

The MTA also sends a reminder to individual forest owners who, according to forestry notification data, sold the right to fell a growing forest or felled forest material in 2022, but did not file a tax return or declare the resulting profit from the transfer of the right or forestry material completely or correctly.

In the electronic service of the Tax and Customs Agency it is possible to subsequently correct declarations dating back up to three years ago, for this it is necessary to first send a request to [email protected], after which the declaration will be opened for updating of the client.
