Musicologist: it is impossible to apply conscious action in improvisation | Movie

The musical film “Extempore” has just been completed. Liberating from the activity of consciousness”, which explores how musical improvisation is born and what the specificities of this activity are.

The film was made as part of the creative music project “Music as a Refuge”. The authors of the film, Heli Reimann and Erik Norkroos, follow the musical research of Raun Juurikas, which crosses non-traditional performative places, and from time to time playful and performative elements intervene in the story.

“In today’s world we love to control everything,” said musicologist and film writer Heli Reimann. “We have laws, rules and plans and, on the other hand, we are mainly interested in the goal and the final result. Now that we talk about musical improvisation, here the situation is completely opposite. We should let go of control and trust, as loves say the same Raun Juurikas. It is important to have faith in the near future. Improvisation actually happens at a specific moment in time, and seconds are known to move very quickly, so it is practically impossible to consciously apply action during this process.”
