On the last day of the Champions League group stage, two tickets for the Champions League round of 16 were drawn. They took PSG and Porto. While the former had to thank Milan, which came out of a losing position, the latter gave a place on the goal line to Shakhtar Donetsk.
The last round of the subgroups with the current format ended in a rather emotional way, as the so-called group of death changed places in the rankings for the entire 90 minutes and even in the last minutes last minute eliminations were in the air. Fans were able to closely follow both the Newcastle-Milan and Dortmund-PSG duels in the north-east of England.
More goals were seen in the first match, where the first half ended in a 1-0 victory for Newcastle. The blow was quite violent: British striker Joelinton bounced the ball into the air with the first touch and launched a powerful rocket into the goal. The Saudi Arabian-owned club also looked quite dangerous in the second half, but suddenly Christian Pulisic scored an equalizer instead. Meanwhile, Mike Maignan made a superb save and then Milan got their second on the counterattack. In the second duel the goals remained in contact in the first half, but it cannot be said that there were no opportunities. However, the defeat did not last long, as just five minutes later 17-year-old Warren Zaire-Emery confidently knocked the ball past all competitors.
As the match progressed, the pace of the game visibly decreased, once Mbappe pushed the ball into the goal, but did so from offside. There were no more dangerous opportunities, because neither of them wanted to take too many risks: Dortmund would have dropped to second place, while PSG would instead have dropped to third. Thus, the duel ended in a draw, so the French could be happy that they got through to the round, but there they will meet any of the following seven opponents: Bayern Munich, London Arsenal, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, Atletico Madrid, Manchester City and Barcelona.

While five goals were scored in two matches in the group of death, fans of subgroup H saw a whopping 13 (!) goals. Particularly intense was the eight-goal battle between Porto and Shakhtar for the last place in the Champions League. The hosts, the Portuguese, immediately took the lead, but at the end of the half the Ukrainians managed to recover. The blow was largely due to a misunderstanding on the part of Porto’s defenders: the referee showed that the Shakhtar striker was offside, but since the referee did not stop the match, the Ukrainians continued to play . Porto’s men didn’t do it too eagerly, perhaps Shakhtar had a chance.

At the same time, Porto rose to the same level as the Catalan giant Barcelona, who lost 0:1 away already in the second minute. However, their opponent was the not so formidable Royal Antwerp, who had not recorded a single point before today. Although Ferran Torres managed to recover at the end of the half, at the start of the second the Spaniards made a mistake in defense and Vincent Janssen, who was at Tottenham a few years ago, put them back in front.
But the drama didn’t even end there! That was the end of the subgroup round, perhaps it was decided who will continue the season and where. The winners of the subgroup, namely Bayern Munich, London Arsenal, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Barcelona, are included in the round of 16 of the Champions League. Their opponent will be one of the eight runners-up: Copenhagen, PSV, Napoli, Inter, Roma Lazio, PSG, RB Leipzig and Porto.
