Nearly a fifth of Swedish Olympic athletes live below the poverty line

This means that, after paying for accommodation and medical expenses, they are left with less than 5,717 Swedish crowns or 518.39 euros per month.

The study was organized by the Swedish Olympic Committee and, according to it, 16% of the country’s Olympic athletes earn less than enough to survive.

The spearhead of the research was the sailor Anton Dahlberg, silver medalist at the OM in Tokyo, and project manager at the Olympic Committee.

“The show surprised me. There are a lot of people who are going through really difficult times right now,” his words were reported on the portal of the Danish television channel TV 2.

However, Dahlberg could see something positive in it. “But the great thing is that there are no complaints and everyone is grateful to do what they are passionate about. The heart is what carries forward,” she explained.

The study also highlighted that without the support of the Olympic Committee, as many as 44 percent of the country’s Olympic athletes would be living below the Swedish poverty line.

“But it’s clear that we get results with very few resources and that athletes are quite vulnerable,” Dahlberg said.

Based on the results of the study, it is concluded that one of the dangers of low income is that athletes may decide to enter a more profitable profession and end their career. According to the Swedish Olympic Committee, support systems for athletes in the country are significantly smaller than, for example, Denmark or Norway. All Swedish athletes who received support from the Olympic Committee between 2019 and 2021 participated in the study.
