New contraband detection technology is coming to prisons

“Our prisons today are modern and safe, but the environment around us is changing rapidly. To maintain security and develop we must exploit all opportunities and be open to new technological solutions. Technological innovation will help in the future to maintain the The main focus is on the reintegration of offenders,” said the head of the penitentiary service Rait Kuuse.

Currently, searches, drug tests, drug-sniffing dogs, X-ray machines and body scanners are used to identify prohibited persons, but existing solutions need to be improved. Ensuring safety is very challenging and different devices have their limitations, which is why both prohibited items and substances end up in prison anyway.

Marek Helm, chairman of the board of directors of the GScan company, said that GScan technology will make security checks much more efficient in the coming years. “The unique technology using natural radiation allows us to confidently identify the chemical composition of scanned objects. We can automatically identify in a transparent object, whether it is a container or other shipment, whether it is drugs , explosives or other prohibited or dangerous substances. It is very important for us to test our first devices in Estonia. Together with specialists from the penitentiary service we get the necessary inputs and feedback for planning and implementing the final developments. This kind of cooperation between the public and private sectors helps to increase Estonia’s export potential, providing a worthy reference and the necessary domestic support,” Helm added.

Cosmic radiation-based technology is a dog nose safe and effective cooperation partner for humans, eliminating human error. The innovation project creates the opportunity to test the performance of the technology through experiments in prison, so that the future is even safer.

If the project is successful, the solutions could also be used in other areas such as the postal service, airport security checks and cross-border checks.

The project is implemented in collaboration with the State Chancellery and the financing of the project comes from the innovation measure of the State Chancellery. The cost of the project is 1.15 million and the duration is 18 months.
