- Former Rankin County sheriff’s deputy Christian Dedmon received the harshest sentence of 40 years in prison for committing what was described as the most “shocking, brutal, and cruel acts imaginable.”
- Another former deputy, Daniel Opdyke, was sentenced to over 17 years in prison.
- Former deputies Hunter Elward and Jeffrey Middleton were sentenced to 20 years and 17 1/2 years in prison, respectively, for their roles in the crimes.
Legal Proceedings
In total, six former officers pleaded guilty to federal charges related to conspiracy against rights, deprivation of rights under color of law, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and obstruction of justice. Elward also pleaded guilty to discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.

The officers, all White, raided a home in Braxton without a warrant in January 2023. They subjected Eddie Parker and Jenkins, two Black men, to racist abuse, used Tasers on them while handcuffed, beat them with various objects, and shot Jenkins in the mouth.

The former officers callously abandoned Jenkins on the ground as they planted a weapon on the victims and concocted their alibi, according to officials.
