A Colorado Paramedic’s Conviction Sparks Questions and a Call for Change
In a case that has captivated national attention and led to significant reforms in public safety, a paramedic in Aurora, Colorado, has been convicted in the death of Elijah McClain, a young unarmed Black man. While the paramedic, Jeremy Cooper, was sentenced to four years of probation with 14 months of work release, a former lieutenant with the department, Peter Cichuniec, received a five-year prison sentence.
The trial shed light on the role of paramedics in police encounters, an issue rarely addressed within the criminal justice system. Three police officers and two paramedics were prosecuted in three separate trials. Last month, a former Aurora police officer, Randy Roedema, was sentenced to 14 months of work release in a county jail.

The UN envoy to Libya, Abdullah Batili, welcomed the appointment of American Stephanie Khoury, deputy for political affairs in the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, expressing his aspiration to work with her “to advance the political process in Libya.”

Khoury’s appointment came as a successor to former Zimbabwean diplomat Raisidun Zenenga, who had served as Deputy Political Affairs at the mission since December 2022.
The United Nations website stated that Khoury held many positions related to conflict management and peacebuilding in the Middle East for 30 years, including 15 in the countries of Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Sudan, Libya and Yemen, the last of which was the position of Director of Political Affairs in the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Sudan, in addition to She has worked as a research fellow at the School of Oriental and African Studies and with NGOs, including Search for Common Ground.

Construction of the first anti-mobility line on the eastern border of Latvia began today. Near the Terekhova border control post, more than a hundred meters from the border, the first anti-tank ditch has been dug, which would prevent vehicles from crossing the forest road.
