The collaboration between the Italian Premier League club AS Roma and manager Jose Mourinho has ended. The Portuguese will leave the club immediately.
Although Mourinho led Roma to the Conference League title in the 2021/22 season, and also played in the Europa League final a year later, he has not achieved much success at home. The club is currently only in 9th place in the 20-team competition, the previous two seasons resulting in sixth place. Last week Roma also suffered a setback in the Cup, when they lost 0:1 to Lazio in the quarter-finals. This led to AS Roma’s decision to fire manager Jose Mourinho.
“On behalf of the entire club, we thank Jose for his passion and efforts. We will always remember his tenure fondly, but we believe that a drastic change is in the best interests of the club”, were the words of explanation and thanks from by Dan and Ryan Friedkin, members of the ownership group, according to the club’s website.
After suffering two consecutive defeats in different series of competitions, Roma’s last victory will be on January 3. The last three points in the league were collected on 23 December against Napoli. This Saturday Hellas Verona will host the 21st round match of Serie A.
Mourinho, who will celebrate his 61st birthday in ten days, has also managed Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Chelsea London, Real Madrid and Inter. He spent more than 2.5 years in Rome.
Updated at 4.15pm: AS Roma will be led by club legend Daniele De Rossi until the end of the season. The 40-year-old Italian has previously only coached SPAL. The tenure at the Serie B team, which at the time also included Estonian national team player Georgi Tunjov, lasted almost four months. De Rossi represented Roma in more than 450 matches, making 117 appearances for the national team.
