On the day of the winter dance, almost 500 folk dancers gathered in the central square of Võru | Estonia

On the seventh day of winter dance in Võru, almost 500 folk dancers gathered in the central square of Võru to dance folk dances from different regions of Estonia together on the snow-covered dance floor.

The winter day of dance in Võru ended with a joint dance in the central square of Võru, where more than 25 collectives danced 14 folk dances, considering the weather conditions, most of the dances had a lively rhythm.

“One of our favorites every year we dance is ‘Padipadinöör’ and definitely ‘Oige ja vasemba’ which we end the dance with, and of course all those cute ‘Clay House Russians’ and everything that has to do with polka, I like them also as dancers,” said Kadri Mähar, program director of the Võru Traditional Dance Festival.

According to dance director Maire Udras, the idea of the event has become a tradition to invite people to move more outdoors and enjoy the winter weather.

“Winter is so special when you look at what’s going on around: this light, after all, must bring something special, a mystery in this dark time. In fact, it allows you to look at these lights, take photos, hug yourself and feel the joy this human warmth and being with a partner next to you, dancing and when it’s cold, you forget about the cold and find that it’s really nice to be outside and dance together,” Udras said.

The dancers did not complain about the cold or slippery conditions, but they found it an interesting experience to dance on the snowy field.

“Really, it has been such an anticipated event every year and to see so many dancers and even those who have just come here to dance, from the street, who have not studied, it is an enormously warm feeling and this is our community,” she said the folk dancer Kati.
