“Our good teachers are a value that cannot be ignored!” President Alar Karis visited Peetri school before the strike

“It’s nice to go to a school that believes it is a great school – I’ve heard this from both students and teachers at Peetri Nursery-Primary School,” the president wrote on his Facebook wall. The students brought fresh, delicious school food and kind teachers who are like close friends of the president.

“Teachers appreciate the friendly working environment and appreciate the frequent warm visits from former students,” the president wrote.

But on January 22nd a national teachers’ strike will begin, also in the Peetri school. “According to director Luule Niinesalu, not so much because of the salary, but because of concern for the future of teachers.”

At the Peetri school there is also currently a shortage of Estonian language, chemistry and mathematics teachers. “The strike, according to them, offers an opportunity to talk about concerns that threaten the arrival and retention of new teachers in the school,” the teachers told Karise.

These factors and areas of concern for teachers include, in addition to salary, high workload, class sizes, lack of support specialists and high parental demands on the school and teachers.

“Exactly, we need to talk about all this and look for solutions to the problems,” Karis said. “If there is no other way out, go on strike, because our good teachers are a value that cannot be ignored.”

But the president still acknowledged that the goal should always be to do everything to prevent a strike.
