PHOTO | There is a flood on the Pirita River in the municipality of Jõelähtme. The water level rose by about two metres

The situation was monitored and during the next check at 9.26pm the water level had risen by around two metres. Three private houses on Jõeääre street were threatened. To better evaluate the event, a drone was used to map the flood area.

It was determined that it was not necessary to evacuate people, but active and rapid intervention was needed, including pumping out water, installing sandbags and diverting water into drainage ditches to prevent flooding of nearby lots .

A command post has been set up on site and so far the operation has been carried out in close cooperation with the local government, which is assisting in digging ditches and diverting water with heavy equipment. Both volunteer and professional rescuers worked tirelessly throughout the night to protect residents’ properties and homes. In total, rescuers from four professional teams and three volunteer rescue teams attended the event with the necessary equipment. Three motor pumps are currently in operation and efforts are being made to divert excess water into ditches for land improvement.

At the moment the rising water is under control and monitoring of the event and pumping continues, it is necessary to move the accumulated ice to solve the problem.
