On Friday 22 December, 46 containers fell into the sea from the Maersk shipping platform and are currently adrift in the Danish municipalities of Bulbjerg and Thisted, Svinkløv and Jammerbugt.

They lie in the water and some drift ashore, press secretary Christer Haven told the media, Nordjyske reports.

However, four containers have already washed ashore, the first of which was on Friday. This was stated by local lifeguard Andreas Rasmussen, who was informed of the incident on Friday morning.

He describes the situation as “chaotic” and “violent”.

The Border Police handles the containers when they are washed ashore.

There are three containers on Tranum Strand south of Blokhus and the municipality of Vendsyssel, while one is drifting ashore on Klim Strand.

Andreas Rasmussen continues by saying that many containers were damaged and therefore the goods fell. This concerns, for example, freezers, refrigerators and cannulae.

Ships in the area were informed of the presence of containers in the water, Nordjyske reports.

Maersk informs in an email sent to TV 2 that the container ship Mayview Maersk reported the loss of containers. The announcement came early in the morning of December 22nd.

Storm Pia, which hit Denmark on Thursday and Friday, threw containers into the sea.

No crew members were injured and the ship is operating normally. The accident occurred during Storm Pia while the ship was traveling in the North Sea on its journey from Bremerhaven in Germany to Gdansk in Poland, Mærsk said in an email to TV 2.

In 2021, a Maersk ship lost 750 containers at sea on its voyage from China to the United States. It happened during a thunderstorm.
