The head of the maternity department of Viljandi hospital: we really need more modern technologies | Christmas tunnel

Diana Vanaveski, head of the maternity department at Viljandi Hospital, told “Jõulutunnel” that in 2023 there were more births in their hospital than last year.

According to him, even a completely normal pregnancy and birth can take an unexpected turn and it may be necessary to provide emergency care to the newborn. “By observing the condition of the baby during birth with the CTG device and analyzing its progress, we can see how the baby tolerates the birth process and from there we can see if it is not receiving enough oxygen,” he explained and added that this is a classic situations in which a child needs assistance.

“There are also very urgent and emergency situations, such as bleeding during childbirth, which can be caused by premature detachment of the placenta, before the baby is born, the placenta has separated, which immediately creates a very critical situation, where we immediately have two patients who urgently need help,” Vanaveski said.

According to him, the system is very well defined on how to behave in such situations. “If already during the pregnancy we see that it is a high-risk pregnancy, where we see that either the woman or the newborn needs support at a higher stage, then the birth is planned immediately in a higher stage center , but normal and normal pregnancies can always end up giving birth, but those women who perhaps are programmed for a higher stage still end up giving birth with us, because the baby chooses its day.”

This year, almost 300 babies were not born in the Viljandi hospital, but according to Vanaveski, there were more births in their hospital in 2023 than last year. “Of course, the downward trend is unfortunately also present in Viljandi,” she said, adding that they maintain their expertise in resuscitating newborns with regular exercises. “Everyone who participates in midwifery must also participate in drills.”

In the maternity ward of Viljandi hospital, a new and more modern resuscitation table is desperately needed. “Medical technology quickly becomes obsolete and new capabilities arise,” she said.
