POLITICAL EDITORIAL | Lavly Perling: Less regulation, restrictions, government intervention. Only free people guarantee a free country

The European Union’s decision to start accession negotiations with them represents an important milestone victory in this distance of freedom. The struggles are different: Ukraine is fighting a full-scale war with the aggressor, along with corruption, Russian influence, oligarchs, dirty government and poverty. But they fight, they make an effort, because they desire freedom. People know all too well what the price of lack of freedom is.

The desire for freedom has enormous power. If the desire for freedom disappears, the result is, at best, lethargy, at worst, a kind of slavery, in which people lose not only their rights and freedoms, but also the ability and willingness to decide about one’s life. A large part of the Estonian population still remembers the feeling of longing for freedom and the moments that symbolized freedom.

Today it seems that we have stopped on the road to freedom. From Toompea and Brussels come rules that organize people’s lives, sometimes of highly questionable value. Services and benefits are distributed generously to those who do not need them, living on benefits instead of working has become possible, widespread populism manipulates people’s free will.
