President Karis: The presence of allies gives confidence to the region

On Thursday, President Alar Karis visited the city of Taara under the command of the 2nd Infantry Brigade, met with conscripts and allies at the Nursipalu training camp, writes Lõunaesti Postimees.

Karis assured Lõunaesti Postimehe that feeling the presence of allies gives the entire region a sense of security.

“Where there are defense forces and allies, there life flourishes,” Karis said and cited the example of the city of Tapa to illustrate this. “We hope that this will also happen in Võrumaa and give people living in this corner of the country confidence that we are protected. The more we see and feel the presence of allies, the better.”

Referring to the statistics, Karis said that 80% of Estonians are satisfied with the presence of the allies. “We are a small country and we need allies,” Karis said. “Before the Second World War we were well trained, but we were a country with few allies: now we have learned from this.”

“If we ourselves believe and instill in ourselves the feeling that we are capable of defending ourselves, then no one will dare to come and attack us,” the president added. “There is absolutely no point in spreading panic – it is a very bad companion. After all, we also need companies here who want to come, set up their own companies and invest. If we ourselves are in a panic, then we have a problem in this sense.”

According to Karis, nowadays people can also increase their sense of protection: for example, they should think about what they will do and where they will go in a dangerous situation. “Also, do everything to end the war in Ukraine and help Ukraine both militarily, politically and with humanitarian aid.”
