Estonian film lovers were surprised on Tuesday by the news that the cult film “Alien” will have a sequel this year. According to director Rasmus Merivoo, the sequel was already in mind during the making of the first film, but it was only made on “Alien’s” tenth birthday.
The first film, “Alien, or Valdis’ escape in 11 parts”, was born from the need to write a thesis. “I took on such a big and serious task. At the same time, another cameraman also wanted to do the final work with me. I thought that I would make this big and difficult film for myself, and then I could do something nice and have fun with him,” the director recalled, adding that project B eventually became project A.
At that time, actors were cast based on being in the same place at the same time in their lives. “The actors are quite similar in age to me. When I graduated from university, Märt Avand, Ott Sepp and Indrek Ojari had already graduated. /…/ When we started shooting the film, they looked like the ones who they could have played in the film. We met at the right age, in the right place and at the right time. Märti, I already knew about the choir. We went together to the Estonian Koolinoorte Segakoor. Uku Uusberg was also there. I had seen other kids too. We hung out together a bit and had the opportunity to go see their productions,” Merivoo explained on the “R2 Day” program.
“We never met these guys in the meantime, and when we started shooting the film, we must admit that it was so nice to meet again and that all the actors are as ripe as pears on a tree in autumn,” said the director . , who is open to good ideas on set, but the specific plan does not allow for more improvisation on set.
The director constantly hears phrases and expressions from the film in people’s speech. “For a day or more. I don’t know what it is. Maybe because I made this movie, people feel more comfortable with me. I went to the radio and an older gentleman I didn’t know immediately shouted ‘Ou, f**k upea.” Then I turned around and we met. He’s cute. I like him,” Merivoo said.
According to Merivoo, when the first film became popular, it shocked the world, but people were already thinking about a sequel. “Even when we wrote the first one, there are some ideas that don’t add up or you wonder how to proceed from here. /…/ The decision to start making a film came when “Alien” had received ten years, and it was organized a nice event in Sõprus, where there were people with caps and burks in front of the house, there a journalist asked me if there would be a second part, so I looked at the group and said that it wouldn’t be come, because it seemed that it would be too capitalistic an evil plan,” Merivoo explained, adding that after a negative response, Valdis came back to him on the way home, and then things started to turn.
All the characters are still in the sequel and Merivoo describes the film as sci-fi, set in the near future. “Life in the city has also become different. Valdis, who lost his memory in the first episode and was slammed into the mud with a shovel before the UFO took him away, returns and this time has no memory loss.
