Retail chains on markup: prices are influenced by the market economy. “The trader in Estonia does everything to maintain his market share”

The study commissioned by the Ministry of Regional Affairs and Agriculture and conducted at the Estonian Economic Institute shows in general terms that the price of most food products increased in the first half of 2023 and stabilized rather than decreased in the third quarter. In mid-2023, when input prices began to fall, consumers expected that counter prices would soon fall, but there was no response. While the share of producers and processors in the final price of food has decreased, the share of trade has increased.

The study results reveal that, for example, the price of skimmed milk for consumers fell for the first time since 2022 in the third quarter of 2023, when a liter cost 0.83 euros. In the second quarter the price of skimmed milk was 0.88 euros and in the first quarter it was 0.86 euros. The share of milk producers is the one that has decreased the most, because since the fourth quarter of 2022 the price of raw milk has fallen by more than 20%, or from 0.39 euros to 0.31 euros. In the same period, however, the commercial share of the price of skimmed milk increased nine times, reaching its peak in the second quarter of 2023 11 times higher (0.11 euros) compared to the third quarter of 2022 (0.01 euros).
