The preparations of the description translation team for the translation of the opening ceremony of Tartu 2024 “All are one” have been going on for two months already, description translator Piret Aus told “Television”. According to sign language interpreter Keiti Verbu, translating a live broadcast is the most challenging job of his career so far.
The live broadcast of the opening ceremony of the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 “Everything is one” can be listened to with descriptive translation by selecting a special channel, and can be watched from Jupiter with sign language translation.
“Preparations for the translation of the opening ceremony have been going on for two months already for the translation team,” said Piret Aus, the organizer of the translation of the description. “We received the script for the ceremony already two months ago. But the final sprint took place in the last day and a half and was very laborious.”
“When it comes to sign language interpretation, I would like to dispel the myth that the interpreter comes and immediately does everything he hears in sync,” said sign language interpreter Keiti Verbu. “That’s absolutely not the case. It still requires a lot of preparation.”
According to Verbu, live television broadcasting is the most challenging work of his career so far. “This is because in the production there are a lot of background sounds, which are not directly instrumental music, but sounds that create the atmosphere, and I hope to be able to convey them with everything that is visual, so that the sign language community also can feel what emotion is in the air right now and what you want to give next,” Verbu said.
Aus explained that descriptive translation mediates visibility for the blind. “When a blind man watches television, for him it is just a concert, a children’s song, but the interpreter of the description tells what movements the children make during the song, how they look and what emotions they have on their faces. And this puts highlight the photo together for the blind person.”
“Cultural translation, i.e. the transmission of songs and music, is performed by the interpreter with the whole body, facial expressions and hands. Every detail conveys emotion. But of course it is very subjective, because every sign language interpreter probably interprets the play a little differently.”
