Slovakia’s prime minister plans to veto Ukraine’s NATO membership

Fico, who has repeatedly expressed opposition to military aid to Ukraine and sanctions against Russia, also opposes Ukraine’s desire to join NATO.

“Ukraine is not an independent and sovereign state,” Fico told Slovakian public broadcaster RTVS. “Ukraine is under the full influence and control of the United States,” he added.

On Wednesday, Fico will meet his Ukrainian counterpart Denõs Šmõhali at the Slovakian border in western Ukraine. “I will tell him that I am against Ukraine joining NATO and I will veto it,” Fico announced. According to him it would be “only the basis for the Third World War and nothing else”.

Fico also confirmed that Slovakia will not provide Ukraine with military aid in the form of weapons. He blamed Ukraine, saying it is “one of the most corrupt countries in the world.” He added: “God knows how much of the aid we send you goes nowhere.”

According to Fico, there is no military solution to the Ukrainian-Russian conflict and he believes that Ukraine should give up part of its territory.

Despite Fico’s criticism of Ukraine, only Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán vetoed Ukraine’s €50 billion aid package last December.
