The Packers’ Day 3 Draft Strategy: Addressing Depth and Future Starters
As the NFL Draft entered its later rounds, the Green Bay Packers focused on addressing depth and finding future starters for key positions. After making several solid picks in previous rounds, General Manager Brian Gutekunst had the opportunity to further strengthen the team’s roster on Day 3.
Interior Offensive Line: Reinforcing Depth
While the Packers have decent depth at offensive tackle with players like Jordan Morgan, Zach Tom, Andre Dillard, and Rasheed Walker, they acknowledged the need to bolster their interior offensive line. Elgton Jenkins at left guard and Josh Myers at center provide stability, but more competition and depth are required.
“The Packers look OK for depth at offensive tackle with Walker, Tom, Dillard, and Morgan,” says Dane Brugler from The Athletic. “But they need to address their depth on the interior.”
Christian Mahogany, a versatile guard from Boston College who plays with power and forceful hands could be an ideal addition. He projects as an NFL starter suited for a downhill running team.
Tanor Bortolini, a center from Wisconsin who offers encouraging upside with his fluidity and technical skill in spite of small hiccups on his college tape may provide valuable position flexibility across the interior line.
Sedrick Van Pran-Granger, a strong run-blocker from Georgia known for his intelligence and leadership qualities could compete for immediate starting reps under optimal circumstances.
Mason McCormick, an offensive guard from South Dakota State exhibits good pass protection skills along with physicality as a run blocker. With time and coaching, he could develop into a potential Day 1 starter.
