This winter, two successful Japanese starters made the jump from Japanese Professional Baseball to the Majors. Yoshinobu Yamamoto sparked a hot bidding war and ended up signing with the Dodgers for $325 million. Shota Imanaga (five years older than Yamamoto) flew a little more under the radar, eventually agreeing with the Cubs for $53 million guaranteed.
About six weeks into the season, both signings are looking very good so far. And for the first time, the two compatriots have crept into the Starting Pitchers Power Rankings. Although neither have risen to the top three yet, it will be interesting to see how high they can go in 2024.
This is the fourth edition of these rankings this season, and as always, our panel of MLB.com voters took into account factors such as track records, season-long performances and recent success. Here are the results. (All statistics are current as of the end of business on Tuesday.)
Wheeler tops this list for the second consecutive time. The Phillies ace has held a top-three spot in each of our first four 2024 polls. As he approaches his 34th birthday on May 30, Wheeler is pitching better than ever, posting a 1.64 ERA in his first eight starts. He has allowed one earned run or less in six of those outings. Right now, he leads Major League pitchers with a 2.29 FIP and is tied for the Major League lead with 63 strikeouts.
